Sergio Pettis set to defend Bellator bantamweight championship on Dec. 3 against Kyoji Horiguchi
Sergio Pettis will try to defend his Bellator bantamweight title for the first time on Dec. 3 against former champion Kyoji Horiguchi.
The bout is scheduled to headline Bellator 272 at the Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Connecticut. Pettis is a perfect 3-0 since joining the promotion in January of 2020, while Horiguchi returns to Bellator in an attempt to reclaim the belt he once had.
News of this fight’s announcement was first reported on Wednesday by way of the Morning Kombat show. It’s since been relayed and confirmed by other media outlets.
Pettis (21-5, 3-0 BMMA) secured the bantamweight strap last May by besting then-champ Juan Archuleta via unanimous decision at Bellator 258. The former UFC contender has now won four straight as he currently sits at No. 7 in the Bellator men’s pound-for-pound rankings. Pettis holds a win over current UFC flyweight champ, Brandon Moreno, back in 2017.
Horiguchi (29-3, 1-0 BMMA) inked a multi-fight deal with Bellator in September, making the upcoming fight his first as an official member of the roster. In 2019, Horiguchi won the Bellator bantamweight belt as a member of RIZIN by defeating Darrion Caldwell in a cross-promotional title bout. He’d later vacate the title as a result of injury. After amassing a record of 7-1 in the UFC, Horiguchi departed to fight under the RIZIN banner where he finished the likes of Manel Kape, Ian McCall, and Ben Nguyen.
Bellator’s bantamweight division continues to build and develop, gradually becoming one of the deepest within the promotion. At Bellator 272, two of the very best bantamweights on the planet will square off when Pettis welcomes Horiguchi back to the promotion.
