Stephen Thompson is “down to fight” one of the Diaz Brothers

Two-time UFC welterweight title challenger and current 7th ranked UFC welterweight, Stephen Thompson, has placed his sights on a bout with one of the Diaz brothers.

Thompson (16-6-1) took to Twitter yesterday and respectfully called out Nick and Nate Diaz. He says, “I’m down to fight [Nick Diaz] or [Nate Diaz].”

“Nothing but respect for both of these guys and I’m ready to go. Who wouldn’t love good striking battle?”

Thompson, who holds seven fight-night bonuses, has suffered consecutive unanimous decision losses to Gilbert Burns and Belal Muhammad in his last outings. The former kickboxing world champion made the transition to MMA in 2010 and has collected victories over the likes of Robert Whittaker, Jorge Masvidal, and most recently, Geoff Neal.

As for Nick Diaz (26-10-0, 2 NC), he has not been victorious since 2011, when he defeated BJ Penn and UFC 137. He came back last year after a six-year layoff where he suffered a loss at the hands of Robbie Lawler.

Nate Diaz (20-13-0) is also on a losing skid, suffering back-to-back losses to Jorge Masvidal and Leon Edwards. During his time in the UFC, he has compiled a fantastic resume with wins over Donald Cerrone, Conor McGregor, and Anthony Pettis.

We know that we can look forward to Nick Diaz returning to the Octagon by the end of 2022, per Cesar Gracie. As for Nate, he has been vocal about wanting to fight this year. He took to Twitter on Tuesday saying, “I been trying to fight every and no go what’s the hold up ufc?”

With Thompson looking to return against one of the brothers, and the brothers also looking to make their return, the UFC may just be interested in putting on the striking showcase bout.

Who would you want to see Stephen Thompson take on, and how would you see it playing out?
