Tom Aspinall submits Alexander Volkov in UFC London main event

The Ultimate Fighting Championship returns to us today, March 19, 2022, for UFC Fight Night 204, going down live from the O2 Arena in London, England.

Headlining the event is a heavyweight clash between former M-1 & Bellator champion Alexander Volkov (No. 6) and rising contender Tom Aspinall (No. 11).

Co-headlining the event is Dan Hooker’s return to the featherweight division, as he takes on No. 7 ranked Arnold Allen.

Reverting back to our main event, Volkov has gone 8-3 inside the octagon thus far, going 3-1 in his last four, while Aspinall is 4-0 in the UFC, all four victories coming via finish.

Does the former champion remain atop the division, or does the surging prospect pick up another win here tonight?

Continue reading to see how this epic heavyweight main event went down:

Official Result: Tom Aspinall def. Alexander Volkov via submission (straight armbar) 3:45 of round one

Aspinall is looking light on the feet, very sharp, as always, and secures a body lock trip takedown early into round one.

It’s surprising seeing his ground game is already this evolved, he’s got great control on the mat. He’s landing some nice elbows, and attempts to lock up a kimura.

However, he lets Volkov back up and they’re back to striking range. Volkov then runs straight into a double leg takedown, and Aspinall jumps right into his side control. He then proceeds to secure a straight armbar, something we very rarely see in this sport, to pick up yet another first round victory.

Tom Aspinall is a serious problem for the entire heavyweight division. No one’s as light on their feet as him, seemingly no one is as accurate, and he already boasts a BJJ black belt, which he just showed off here tonight.

He’s now 5-0 inside the octagon with five finishes, and 12-2 as a professional, also all finishes.

What’s next for Tom Aspinall?

I became a fan of combat sports when I was 12 years old. I was scrolling through the channels and landed upon Versus, where WEC was televised. Urijah Faber fought Jens Pulver for the second time that night. That's the first fight I ever saw, and I was immediately hooked. So eventually, I began covering the sport in the fourth quarter of 2018, and have since started writing about animals as well.
