In tonight’s UFC 216 main event top lightweights Tony Ferguson and Kevin Lee came together for the organization’s interim lightweight title. What a scrap this was.  Lee might have been ahead on the scorecards but Ferguson was able to pull off a third round triangle choke submission to earn the interim title.

In the co-main event spot, a fight that was rebooked from last month after Ray Borg fell ill. Demetrious Johnson defended his flyweight title against Borg, with a chance to enter the record books.  Johnson surpassed Anderson Silva for the record of most successful title defense in UFC history.  He submitted Borg in the fifth and final round via armbar to record his 12th title defense.

Today a heavyweight fight that was scheduled for the pay-per-view portion of the card.  Former UFC heavyweight champion Fabricio Werdum will not fight Derrick Lewis as Lewis has withdrawn due to a lingering back injury. Another heavyweight fight between Walt Harris and Mark Godbeer is also scrapped.  Harris has accepted the fight against Werdum on extremely short notice.  Unfortunately for Harris he had to climb Mt. Everest and was submitted by Werdum in the first round.

Mara Romero Borella became the first woman from Italy to compete inside the octagon when she took on Kalindra Faria.  Borella won the fight via first round submission.

A fun fight between Evan Dunham and Beneil Dariush was ruled a majority draw.  It would be the second draw of the night.

During the opening round of Bobby Green vs. Lando Vannata, Vannata landed an illegal knee that actually hit with the thigh.  Officials entered the octagon to check on Green and after the fight resumed Vannata had a point deducted by referee Herb Dean.  That would become a factor later as the fight went the distance and was ruled a draw.

After being told that he could not walk out to Bone Thugs N’ Harmon’s “Thuggish Ruggish Bone” earlier this week following the shootings in Las Vegas, John Moraga was allowed to have the song played before his entrance into the octagon.  Moments later he was celebrating a victory after knocking out Majored Bibulatov.
