The UFC heads to Houston, Texas this week with not one, but two titles on the line Saturday night at UFC 247. Order and watch the event here.
In the main event, one of the greatest mixed martial artists to ever compete inside the octagon, light heavyweight champion, Jon “Bones” Jones puts his title on the line against the challenger in Dominick Reyes.
With just one blemish on his professional career, a disqualification loss more than 10 years ago, Jon Jones is without a doubt a future UFC Hall of Famer.
“Deep down inside, I did believe I would be in the situation I am in now [as the top-ranked fighter in MMA] and I’m excited to see me 10 years from now, you know? I believe that I’ll still be on top of the sport,” Jon Jones said to ESPN’s Ariel Helwani. “I’ve always had a very strong conviction that I could be the greatest ever, and sure enough through just years of belief and hard work we’re here.”
Jones, 25-1, enters the octagon for the first time since his split decision win over Thiago Santos in July 2019, arguably the champion’s toughest test to date.
His opponent, Reyes (12-0), gets the title opportunity after winning six straight with the UFC. “The Devastator” Reyes picked up a first round win over former UFC middleweight champion Chris Weidman in his last outing. He also holds decision wins over former light heavyweight title challengers Ovince St. Preux and Volkan Oezdemir.
In the night’s co-main event, women’s flyweight champion Valentina Shevchenko looks to retain gold against New Jersey’s Katlyn Chookagian.
Shevchenko has successfully defended her flyweight title twice with wins over Jessica Eye and Liz Carmouche, since capturing the then vacant gold with a unanimous decision win over former strawweight champion Joanna Jedrzejczyk. Chookagian enters the contest riding a two-fight win streak with decisions over Joanne Calderwood and Jennifer Maia.
