UFC 289: Nassourdine Imavov vs Chris Curtis anticlimactically ends in no contest

The Ultimate Fighting Championship returns to us tonight, June 10, 2023, for UFC 289, going down live from the Rogers Arena in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.

Headlining the event is a title bout between longtime UFC bantamweight champion Amanda Nunes (22-5) and no. 5 ranked Irene Aldana (14-6).

Co-headlining the event is an epic lightweight contest between no. 1 ranked former UFC lightweight champion Charles Oliveira (33-9, 1 NC) and no. 4 ranked Beneil Dariush (22-4-1).

Headlining our preliminary card tonight was a middleweight bout between no. 12 ranked Nassourdine Imavov (12-4) and no. 14 ranked Chris Curtis (30-10). Each of these two had gone 4-2 thus far into their UFC tenures, and each man came in having lost their last fight; Imavov to Sean Strickland, and Curtis to Kelvin Gastelum.

Continue reading to see how our preliminary main event of the evening went down:

Official Result: Nassourdine Imavov vs Chris Curtis results in no contest (clash of heads) at 3:04 of round two

Curtis is looking sharp on the feet to begin the bout, but is taken down midway through the round. Imavov is unable to keep him down on his initial attempt, but keeps the pressure on and eventually takes Curtis’ back, ending the round in dominant position.

Imavov is on point in round two as well, throwing and landing crisp combinations.

The two end up clashing heads about three minutes into the middle stretch however, which ultimately ends the fight, as Curtis suffered a cut in the process and was unable to open his eye in the minutes following.

This is a true disappointment in what was a great fight in the making.

I became a fan of combat sports when I was 12 years old. I was scrolling through the channels and landed upon Versus, where WEC was televised. Urijah Faber fought Jens Pulver for the second time that night. That's the first fight I ever saw, and I was immediately hooked. So eventually, I began covering the sport in the fourth quarter of 2018, and have since started writing about animals as well.
