UFC APEX 3: Eye Vs. Calvillo Breakdown
Saturday June 13th, the UFC Apex will host another card, in the main event slot Jessica Eye vs. Cynthia Calvillo.
A flyweight contender in Jessica Eye, and a former strawweight in Cynthia Calvillo look to provide in the main event slot after a firework filled UFC 251 rocked the Apex the week before. Jessica Eye is only one fight removed from a loss to champion Valentina Shevchenko and looks to add another win to her impressive resume. Eye has won four of her last five in the cage, her only loss coming from the champion at UFC238. Eye, while not holding an immensely impressive record (15-7-1) has fought some of the best that WMMA has to offer, including former champion Miesha Tate.
Cynthia Calvillo is looking to impress with a win over a top contender in the wide open flyweight division. The former strawweight top 10 contender surprises no-one with this move up in weight. Calvillo has had trouble on a few occasions with weight cuts, the latest occurring at UFC Fight Night 140. Calvillo is still, an rightfully so, looked at as a promising prospect even at her new weight. At 8-1-1, Calvillo has finished five of her eight victories as a professional. The former strawweight has fought an impressive seven times in the UFC, showing how highly she is touted with only 10 professional fights.
Eye is looking for a reason to find herself back in a title fight, Calvillo is looking to prove her weight cutting issues are a thing of the past, and to impress at her new weight class. Eye, a former bantamweight, has the size advantage but not by an insane amount as one might expect. Calvillo while a decent striker built off of combinations is a world class grappler, this allows her to focus on her striking without worry of takedowns. Calvillo has the ability to pick when she wants a fight to go to the ground. Eye is boxing based, she has only stopped one of her UFC victories, while without knockout power her combinations show speed and intensity. If Eye can keep this one standing she can overwhelm Calvillo, but with worry of takedowns, Calvillo could possess an upper hand in striking ability.
Two women looking for a resume boosting win, in the main event slot during this pandemic. The UFC has now held five cards since the cancellation of most sporting events in March, 2020. This will be the second card headlined by WMMA fighters, in what will be back to back weeks.
