UFC on ESPN+ 29 results: Brian Kelleher puts Hunter Azure away in the second round

The UFC makes a quick turnaround after UFC 249 with UFC on ESPN+ 29 Wednesday, May. 13. 

Light-heavyweights Anthony Smith and Glover Teixeira headline the event at the VyStar Veterans Memorial Arena in Jacksonville, Florida. Ovince Saint Preux bounces up to heavyweight to take on Ben Rothwell in the co-main event.

Bantamweights Brian Kelleher and Hunter Azure bump up to featherweight for the short-notice fight. Kelleher ended a two-fight losing streak by choking out Ode Osbourne at UFC 246 in January. 

Kelleher is a seven-time UFC veteran with other wins over Renan Barao, Damian Stasiak and Iuri Alcantara. 

Azure is coming off hisUFC debut with a unanimous decision over Brad Katona at UFC on ESPN+ 16 in September 2019. Azure earned his UFC contract after beating Chris Ocon by unanimous decision on Dana White’s Contender Series in July 2019.

ROUND 1

The two don’t tap gloves, Azure lands a jab, followed by a leg kick. Kelleher goes high with a kick, but is blocked by Azure. Azure is in the center, leads with a  jab and follows with an outside leg kick. Azure lands an inside leg kick. Kelleher goes for a body kick, blocked again by Azure. Kelleher shoots for a takedown and is stuffed. Kelleher throws a front kick to the face, doesn’t connect cleanly. Kelleher lands jab and ducks under the counter. Kelleher lands a left hook, followed by a jab. Kelleher shoots for the takedown. Azure is defending off the cage. Kelleher breaks off and Azure chases with a left hook. Kelleher lands a left hook, then takes a leg kick. Azure throws a head kick and slips. The two exchange briefly.

ROUND 2

Both fighters rush to the center. Kelleher misses with a front kick. Azure lands a jab and follows with a leg kick. Azure rushes forward with punches. Kelleher faints and Azure misses with a jab. Kelleher lands a double jab, followed by an overhand right. Azure misses with an outside leg kick. Kelleher’s left leg shows some damage, a red mark on his leg. Kelleher is finding his hands in the second round. Azure backs Kelleher up to the cage and Kelleher shuffles away. The two trade back-and-forth. Kelleher fades to the left and lands a left hand on the button.

Official result: Brian Kelleher def. Hunter Azure by knockout at 3:40 in round 2.
