Urijah Faber open to fighting Cub Swanson at 135lbs in WEC legends match

UFC Hall of Famer Urijah Faber says he is open to fighting fellow veteran Cub Swanson at 135lbs in a WEC legends match.

Faber hasn’t competed since a KO loss to Petr Yan at UFC 245 in December 2019, but he has hinted at a potential comeback to the Octagon in recent months. Swanson, meanwhile, recently knocked out Darren Elkins, who trains with Faber at Team Alpha Male. Immediately following the big win over Elkins, Swanson used his post-fight press conference as an opportunity to call out Faber. Although Swanson normally fights at 145lbs, he said he’d drop to 135lbs to fight Faber.

Taking to his social media to respond to Swanson’s recent callout, Faber admitted that he is open to the idea of fighting the fellow California native to find out who the true “King of Cali” really is.

“(Swanson said) directly afterward in the press conference (at UFC Vegas 45) that his dream fight would be to fight in Palm Springs against yours truly. He wants to drop to 135lbs. Honestly, I know he broke his hand, that might give me enough time to train, he said he would drop down to 135s. We were supposed to fight back in 2004 in King of the Cage on short notice for $1000. I think they were going to pay him a couple hundred bucks and they were going to pay me like $1000. That never happened, so Cubbie, I’m honored that I’m your dream fight in this scenario. So we might find out who the king of California is,” Faber said.

It will be interesting to see if this fight does get made given both men are legends of the sport and both want the fight. On another note, it would be cool if the UFC made a new belt crowning the “King of Cali” between Faber and Swanson, similar to the BMF title fight belt they made in 2019.
