UFC bantamweight contender Cody Stamann called out Urijah Faber, saying “that’s a guy I’ve wanted to fight since I hit puberty.”
Stamann is currently the No. 15 ranked bantamweight in the UFC and is pretty much the gatekeeper to breaking into the rankings. He is 5-3-1 overall in the UFC and has proven himself to be a tough out for the majority of his career. And even though Stamann is coming off of back-to-back losses to Jimmie Rivera and Merab Dvalishvili, he is still a ranked fighter and wants to call his shot.
If there’s one name out there that he wants more than anyone else, it’s the UFC Hall of Famer Faber, who has recently suggested he may be coming out of retirement and fight for the first time since December 2019. If Faber is truly going to make a comeback, then Stamann wants a piece of him. Speaking to TMZ Sports, Stamann said this is a fight he’s wanted to have since he was a teenager.
“I want a big fight. I’ve fought pretty much every top contender including the champ, Aljamain Sterling. I’ve fought the who’s who of the UFC bantamweight division and I just really want a big name,” Stamann said. “I heard Urijah Faber is talking about making his return. That’s a guy I’ve wanted to fight since I hit puberty. That’s No. 1. If he comes back, I want to be at the top of the list of the guys that can fight him.”
If Faber isn’t available, Stamann also mentioned Dominick Cruz and Frankie Edgar as potential opponents. But the fighter who he really wants more than anyone is Faber, if he could choose the fight.
“Or Dominick Cruz. That’s another OG, future Hall of Famer. The toughest of the three would be Frankie Edgar. I know that Frankie was supposed to fight Sean O’Malley. Sean O’Malley said he had the sniffles or whatever. He didn’t want to fight in New York, I don’t know what that kid’s deal is,” Stamann said. “But if we are talking list 1, 2, 3, Faber’s up there at the very top.”
