Vicente Luque still wants “Fight of the Year” with Nate Diaz, keen on Leon Edwards rematch

UFC welterweight contender Vicente Luque is interested in facing off against the winner of the UFC 262 matchup between Nate Diaz and Leon Edwards.

Following his recent submission win over Tyron Woodley at UFC 260, Luque took the mic and called out Diaz. However, the UFC instead booked Diaz against Edwards at UFC 262 in a five-round co-main event. That temporarily leaves Luque without an opponent, but the Brazilian — the winner of nine of his last 10 fights — is open to taking on the winner. Speaking to TMZ Sports, Luque said he is interested in the winner of Diaz vs. Edwards.

“I think it’s funny about that callout, a lot of people said, ‘You wasted the call out because Nate will never come back to fight.’ And then the same week I called him out he has a fight, he’s back, he’s got a fight. Yeah, I definitely wanted to be his opponent, but I think it’s going to be a great fight. For Nate, it makes a lot of sense. I’m No. 6 and Leon is No. 3 so he’s the fighter that, if he gets a win over Leon, he’s going to be right there to fight for the title. So I think it was a great fight, a great matchup. I’m interested in any of those two guys, so whatever goes down with that fight, maybe one of them can be my opponent after the fight,” Luque said.

Luque said that he wants the chance to prove he’s a different fighter than he was four years ago when he fought Edwards, while with Diaz he just thinks it would be an amazing fight for the fans.

“I want the rematch against Leon Edwards. We fought in 2017 and since then I’ve changed a lot. I know that he has evolved a lot as well. We’ve both have been on a great winning streak and right now I think it makes a lot of sense to have that rematch. It would be a hell of a fight. Both of us have really nice styles, and it’s hard to have a boring fight when I’m in there. So yeah, any of those two fights. And Nate Diaz, I don’t even have to talk about it. He’s the type of opponent that me and him, we’d have a chance to have a ‘Fight of the Year’ contender. For sure, any of those two are guys I will be looking at and it will be much more up to them than me. I’m a guy who takes fights, I want to take the toughest fights I can, so if it’s up to me, I will take these fights for sure,” Luque said.

Do you hope Vicente Luque fights the winner of Nate Diaz vs. Leon Edwards or is there another matchup you prefer for “The Silent Assassin”?
