Watch: Sean Brady mauls and submits Kelvin Gastelum with kimura at UFC Austin

The Ultimate Fighting Championship returned to us tonight, December 2, 2023, for UFC Austin, going down live from the Moody Center in Austin, Texas.

Headlining the event is a lightweight affair between a pair of top contenders in no. 4 ranked Beneil Dariush (22-5-1) and no. 8 ranked Arman Tsarukyan (20-3).

Co-headlining the event was also a lightweight encounter, this one coming between no. 12 ranked Jalin Turner (13-7) and no. 13 ranked Bobby Green (31-14-1). Green was originally slated to face no. 9 ranked Dan Hooker in tonight’s co-main event, and it was to be the first ever co-main non title bout in UFC history to be slated for five rounds.

Our first feature fight of the evening came at 170 lbs between no. 9 ranked Sean Brady (16-1) and former interim middleweight title challenger Kelvin Gastelum (17-9).

Brady, following a 5-0 run in the UFC from 2019 to 2021, came into the bout off the first defeat of his career to no. 2 ranked Belal Muhammad last October. Gastelum on the other hand dropped back down to the welterweight division tonight for the first time since 2016, coming into the bout off a win over Chris Curtis earlier this year in April.

Official Result: Sean Brady def. Kelvin Gastelum via submission (kimura) at 1:43 of round three

Brady initiates a clinch once the bout begins and gets Gastelum down to the mat in the first minute of the opening round. He takes Gastelum’s back, dominating the early goings until Gastelum gets out and reverses position.

Gastelum reigns down heavy shots from top position before Brady works his way back to his feet, eventually knocking Gastelum off balance with a right hand and immediately assuming top position, which he kept for the remainder of round one.

Round two is quite similar, Brady holding mount for much of it. Gastelum is able to escape it, giving up his back in the process, and ending the round mounted along the fence.

Brady secures another takedown to start the third and final round. It was almost too easy, he’s been on point tonight. He again secures mount, searching for the arm-triangle choke finish. Just when it appears he may finish the fight with it, Brady lets it go and takes focus on Gastelum’s right arm.

Brady locks in a kimura, before readjusting it and finishing the fight with it.

Sean Brady rebounds from the first defeat of his career with an impressive and dominant showcase tonight at UFC Austin.

I became a fan of combat sports when I was 12 years old. I was scrolling through the channels and landed upon Versus, where WEC was televised. Urijah Faber fought Jens Pulver for the second time that night. That's the first fight I ever saw, and I was immediately hooked. So eventually, I began covering the sport in the fourth quarter of 2018, and have since started writing about animals as well.
