WBC: Floyd Mayweather and Julio Cesar Chavez verbally agree to exhibition in 2022
Boxing never ceases to surprise us. Announced by the WBC today, Floyd Mayweather and Julio Cesar Chavez have agreed to an exhibition bout in 2022. This comes off of Mayweather’s exhibitions with Logan Paul and Tenshin Nasukawa after retiring from boxing professionally. Chavez recently did a four round exhibition with Hector Camacho in June on the same card Anderson Silva defeated Julio Cesar Chavez Jr.
The bout was said to be agreed to by the WBC during their annual summit today. With the controversy surrounding these exhibition bouts, fans are liable to speak out against Mayweather boxing the 59 year old. But, with the Mayweather-Paul sideshow, I’m more keen on the two getting in the ring and putting on a show between two generational icons without killing each other.
Floyd Mayweather vs. Julio Cesar Chavez? Okay…
We all know Floyd Mayweather and his accomplishments. He went perfect at 50-0, defeating Conor McGregor in his final bout. Since then, he fought Nasukawa at RIZIN 14 in Japan. That was supposed to be an exhibition until Nasukawa threw something Mayweather didn’t like and Mayweather knocked him out. Floyd went on to box Logan Paul, the YouTube turned boxer, and went to a decision that was a draw.
For the younger fans, Julio Cesar Chavez is a boxing icon. He’s accomplished more than almost any other boxer and is routinely in the top 10 and even top 5 all time lists. He compiled a record of 107-6. Yes, he won over one hundred fights. Chavez has shared the ring with names like Oscar De La Hoya, Pernell Whittaker, Meldrick Taylor, Roger Mayweather (Floyd’s uncle), and many more legends. Chavez started his career at an astounding 89-0-1 before losing to Frankie Randall in 1994, going undefeated for fourteen years.
What are the risks?
There will be many that will cry foul of this type of matchmaking should Mayweather and Chavez actually get set and booked for a date. When Vitor Belfort knocked out Evander Holyfield, plenty of people called into question the athletic commission green-lighting the fight. The fallout caused a bout between former champion Riddick Bowe and NBA All-Star player Lamar Odom to get canceled.
But we’ve seen in the past how these exhibitions are generally understood to be sparring sessions. Logan Paul and Mayweather boxed and Mayweather pulled back to let the fight go the distance. Mike Tyson and Roy Jones Jr. also didn’t go for the kill against each other in Tyson’s long awaited return.
Only time will tell if Mayweather and Chavez gets booked and how it will be played out. Stay posted to My MMA News for all the latest surrounding these novel boxing exhibitions. Thanks for reading!
