What’s Next For Frank Mir? Lesnar or Nogueira Trilogy?
Facing a four-fight losing streak, and going into his opponent’s home country as an underdog, Frank Mir overcame adversity and showed the mixed martial arts world why he was a UFC champion, twice. With Mir’s quick work of Antonio Silva, the former heavyweight champ improved to 17-9 and avoided a potential-fifth straight loss and possible release from the UFC.
A win can certainly boost a fighter’s ego, and this win certainly helped Mir regain momentum to make a forward push to take another journey to a title shot. The question now is, who should Mir face next?
Mir has expressed interest in facing a former nemesis in Brock Lesnar in what would be a trilogy match between the two former UFC champions. Mir won the first match with a kneebar submission, while Lesnar avenged the loss in their second meeting, scoring a vicious TKO win over Mir.
If Lesnar does not return to MMA, Mir also expressed his interest in coming back to fight in Brazil against another hometown hero and MMA legend in Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira. Mir has the upper edge against “Big Nog”, as he defeated Nogueira in both of their encounters (via TKO the first match, and technical submission in their second fight).
A trilogy between Mir and Lesnar may appeal to the fans more, as the fight would serve as a tie-breaker, and the two have no love lost in their real-life feud between the two heavyweights.
