Alex Perez vs. Matt Schnell targeted for UFC 262

An intriguing flyweight bout between top-10 ranked fighters Alex Perez and Matt Schnell is targeted for the UFC pay-per-view card on May 15.

Marcel Dorff of MMA DNA first reported the news that Perez vs. Schnell was in the works for UFC 262. The event also has a women’s flyweight bout between Katlyn Chookagian and Viviane Araujo booked for it, plus another women’s 125lbs bout between Priscila Cachoeira and Gina Mazany. The card takes place on May 15 but the location and venue are both TBD.

Perez (24-6) is the No. 4 ranked flyweight in the UFC. The 28-year-old American has been in the UFC since 2017 and has gone 6-2 overall in the Octagon thus far, with wins over Jussier Formiga, Jordan Espinosa, Mark de la Rosa, Jose Torres, Eric Shelton, and Carls John de Tomas, and losses to Joseph Benavidez and Deiveson Figueiredo. In his last outing at UFC 255 last November, Perez got his chance to fight for the UFC flyweight title, but things didn’t go well for him as he was finished by the champ Figueiredo in the first round. He’s hoping a win here over Schnell can get him back to the title picture.

Schnell (15-5) is the No. 7 ranked flyweight in the UFC. The 31-year-old American is 5-3 overall in the UFC, with wins over Tyson Nam, Jordan Espinosa, Louis Smolka, Naoki Inoue, and Marco Beltran, with losses to Alexandre Pantoja, Hector Sandoval, and Rob Font. He started fighting professionally in 2012 after his stint on the MTV reality show “Caged” and went on to fight for several promotions in the southern U.S. regional scene, including Legacy FC. After going 10-2 on the regional scene, with a DQ win over current UFC bantamweight Jonathan Martinez, the UFC brought Schnell in for a stint on “The Ultimate Fighter” 24. Though he lost to Tim Elliott on the show, he has gone on to have a very solid UFC career.

Who do you think wins, Alex Perez or Matt Schnell?
