Amanda Nunes may very well go down as the best female fighter to ever compete in the UFC, and rightfully so. She holds wins over the likes of Ronda Rousey, Cris Cyborg, Miesha Tate, and Valentina Shevchenko, twice. If that isn’t enough, Nunes is the first ever female champ-champ in the UFC.
Nunes doesn’t have any fights booked but many are speculating her next fight will be against Holly Holm for the bantamweight title. If that turns out to be the case, that may very well be Nunes’ last fight ever, and that is because her mom has asked her to retire.
“I went home to see my family and stay a little bit with my family. My mom (said), ‘I think you should retire,’” Nunes told reporters UFC Fortaleza. “(She said), ‘You’ve done everything in the sport already, you’ve got everything you want, you’re double champion. I feel like you should take a little bit. Maybe if you want to fight one more time and take a little break. Maybe after a long break come back and fight one more time, but I feel like you should.’ I think (about it) a little bit. We’ll see with this next stage what’s going on.”
A reason why Nunes wants to retire is so she can start a family with her fiancee and fellow UFC fighter, Nina Ansaroff. Plus, Nunes wants to focus on Ansaroff’s career.
“I’m a little bit tired of all the big fights,” Nunes said. “Everyone is happy and glad and proud that I did all that. I want a little break to get a family and focus more on Nina’s career. We’ll see. I say those things, but you know how fighting is. We get involved so much and then we want to do it again. We’ll see. I’m looking for this fight with Holly for sure and I’m ready for the call.”
Although many believe Nunes’ next fight will be against Holm, that has yet to be announced. or even talked about for that matter.
“They don’t call me yet, but I’m waiting for it,” Nunes said. “Let’s see what’s going to happen. I think this fight is very interesting. Holly Holm is the only fighter who is a former champion who I didn’t fight her. That would be an interesting fight for sure.”
If that is the end of Nunes’ career, she had an amazing career and will no doubt be in the Hall-of-Fame.
