Bellator 142, also known as Bellator: Dynamite 1, took place today at the SAP Center in San Jose, California.
The show was a collaboration between GLORY and Bellator and featured fights in both a ring and a cage.
Besides the historic main card, perhaps the biggest news of the night might have been the return of ‘The Last Emporer’ Fedor Emelianenko. Fedor will make his return this New Year’s Eve in Japan at a yet-to-be named event against a yet to be determined opponent.
Spike TV will celebrate New Year’s Eve with an MMA mega-event featuring mixed martial arts worldwide legend Fedor Emelianenko. Emanating from Tokyo, Japan, the event marks the debut of a new global MMA promotion run by former Pride President Nobuyuki Sakakibara.
Bellator will partner with Mr. Sakakibara on the MMA extravaganza and will have fighters from its roster participating. The event will be broadcast to Spike’s 93 million homes in the United States.
Bellator 142 was headlined by a Bellator light heavyweight title fight between the champion, Liam McGeary and challenger, Tito Ortiz. After a submission loss in the very first round, the former UFC champ Ortiz was uncertain of his future. He did not announce retirement but also did not commit to a return.
A four-man one-night light heavyweight tournament was set to determine the next title challenger. In the first fight Phil Davis defeated former champ Emanuel Newton via submssion, followed by King Mo defeating former challenger Linton Vassell via decision. The bouts were set for only two rounds instead of three. Although Mo won, he suffered and injury which brought in Francis Carmont who won earlier in the preliminary bouts.
Davis would go on to knockout Carmont and move on to challenge McGeary at a future date.
