Bobby Green explains what makes Islam Makhachev different following decisive loss at UFC Vegas 49
UFC lightweight contender Bobby Green explained what makes Islam Makhachev different following his decisive loss at UFC Vegas 49.
Green stepped in on short notice for the five-round main event after Beneil Dariush was forced to withdraw due to a broken leg. Makhachev was a massive betting favorite to get the job done, and he did so in impressive fashion when he took Green down and finished him via first-round ground-and-pound TKO. It was Makhachev’s fourth straight stoppage win and his 10th straight win overall as he improved to 11-1 in the UFC. It was an incredible performance by Makhachev, who continues to show that he is among the most elite lightweights in the world by taking Green out in such a quick fashion.
For Green, this was his first stoppage loss in the UFC since 2016, as the normally-durable Green often goes to decisions in his fights. However, Makhachev showed that there truly are levels to this game with a dominant first-round finish. Speaking to ESPN following UFC Vegas 49, Green explained what the secret to Makhachev’s success is, explaining how he is patient until he then goes in for the kill.
“I’ve got it now. So what they do, is they do this little thing where he’s so patient, he’s so strong, he just goes little, little, little, and little until he gets right where he wants to be. I tried to do some turning over but he went to mount. He was so strong at holding his mount but I couldn’t turn to move. No one’s been that strong before, so I need to work on my weight training and build up those muscles to build up my strength training for this division,” Green said.
