Islam Makhachev dominates and finishes Bobby Green at UFC Vegas 49

The Ultimate Fighting Championship returns to us tonight, February 26, 2022, for UFC Vegas 49, headlined by top ranked lightweight contender Islam Makhachev (No. 4), who faces Bobby Green in the five-round main event of the evening.

Makhachev was initially slated against fellow top contender Beneil Dariush (No. 3) tonight, however, Dariush was forced to withdraw via injury sustained in camp, thus giving Green the chance to step in just two weeks following his latest appearance, and victory.

Makhachev comes into the bout with a record of 21-1, on a nine-fight win streak, having gone 3-0 in 2021 with three finishes. Green on the other hand comes into the bout on a two-fight win streak, though his last two defeats were controversial; he nearly went 4-0 in 2020.

Nonetheless, he finished off 2021 by becoming the first man to knock out Al Iaquinta.

Official Result: Islam Makhachev def. Bobby Green via TKO (punches) at 3:23 of round one

Makhachev opens up the bout with a head kick, followed by some leg kicks and snap kicks to keep the distance from Green’s punches. Green is looking elusive early on, as he always does, picking his shots wisely.

However, Makhachev goes in for an early takedown, and while he’s initially stuffed, he does end up securing double overhooks. Most that’ve watched Makhachev fight know all he has to do is grab his opponents, and they end up grounded.

Green defends the first couple attempts though, until Makhachev backs out and immediately shoots on a double leg. He secures it, and before long, secures mount. It was here that the fight was ended, as Makhachev was pounding away at a Green who wasn’t able to intelligently defend himself.

Makhachev is now on a ten-fight win streak, a four-fight finish streak, and he needs a top ranked opponent to stay healthy throughout their camp. Just imagine if he fought Beneil Dariush tonight as planned.

I became a fan of combat sports when I was 12 years old. I was scrolling through the channels and landed upon Versus, where WEC was televised. Urijah Faber fought Jens Pulver for the second time that night. That's the first fight I ever saw, and I was immediately hooked. So eventually, I began covering the sport in the fourth quarter of 2018, and have since started writing about animals as well.
