David Goggins to corner Tony Ferguson at UFC 296

Former interim lightweight champ Tony Ferguson is known for his…peculiar training camps. He may have stepped his game up for his UFC 296 bout with Paddy Pimblett by going through a Hell Week with finer SEAL David Goggins. It appears when UFC 296 rolls around, it will be Tony Ferguson carrying the boats. It was announced today that Goggins will also be cornering Ferguson for the fight.

David Goggins: Earn your pain

Ferguson went through Goggins’ Hell Week program that puts people through a Navy SEALs style hell week and push them physically and mentally. Those who have followed Ferguson for some time will not be surprised and the collaboration makes sense.

Goggins has worked with many athletes, and none have completed his program. That is until Ferguson came around, again not a shocker. Goggins did confirm that Ferguson was the first to complete the program, which is insane when you remember Ferguson is 39 years old.

It is apparent that Ferguson isn’t done with David Goggins. Now in the middle of the fight, if Ferguson doesn’t run through Paddy Pimblett in a round, we could hear Goggins give Ferguson a mid round speech to keep him focused.

There are concerns that Ferguson may be over trained for this fight. Athletes, especially in combat sports, have to compete and peak and the right time. Over training is an issue and with Ferguson on an 0-6 run, people aren’t sure they can stomach another loss from “El Cucuy.”

But there is no telling Tony Ferguson what to do. He lives life on his own path and will not listen to what other people tell him.

This isn’t the first time someone had a peculiar corner for a fight. Mike Perry had his girlfriend in his corner for one of his last UFC fights. Joaquin Buckley also brought in DUST Commander Dale Brown into his corner for a fight two years ago.
