Gary Shaw, Elite XC promoter, dead at 79

Gary Shaw, former promoter of Elite XC which brought mixed martial arts to CBS, has died at age 79.

Shaw, who was a boxing promoter before launching into MMA got his start in combat sports in 1971 when he began working for the New Jersey State Athletic Control Board.

With the aid of his son Jared “$kala” Shaw, the two men brought Elite XC to national headlines as the first MMA promotion to hold fights on CBS.

Stars such as Kimbo Slice and Gina Carano made their name under the Elite XC banner.
