Gervonta Davis remains undefeated, knocks Ryan Garcia out with body shot in round seven

Showtime Boxing returned to us tonight, April 22, 2023, where two of the biggest young stars in the sport shared the ring in a 12-round main event slot, a lightweight showcase between Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis and ‘King’ Ryan Garcia.

This is a fight many of us fans have wanted to see for two-to-three years now, and it’s quite rare we see two undefeated phenoms face one another, especially this early into their respective careers; Davis being 28 years of age, and Garcia just 24.

Going into this fight, Davis had a record of 28-0 (26 knockouts), while Garcia had a record of 23-0 (19 knockouts).

‘Tank’ is a three-division world champion, having held the IBF & WBA titles in the super-featherweight, lightweight, and super-lightweight divisions. ‘KingRy’ on the other hand has only taken part in one world title bout, where he claimed the interim WBC lightweight championship with his 7th-round knockout victory over Olympic gold medalist Luke Campbell.

Official Result: Gervonta Davis def. Ryan Garcia via KO (body punch) at 1:44 of round seven

There wasn’t much going on through the first three minutes, as Garcia tried to establish his jab with Davis circling the outside.

Round two was much, much different.

Garcia lands a very fast, vicious combination that stumbles Davis, forcing him to tie up. Garcia continues to chase after Davis but is floored with a thunderous overhand right in an exchange.

Davis begins to land his jab in round three, following it up with a left cross often times, both to the body and head. He continues to do this through rounds four and five, with Garcia’s output slowing slightly.

Round six shows Garcia crack Davis with two hard back-to-back overhand rights, though Davis remains unfazed and starts to land his own one and two-punch combinations toward the end of the round.

Garcia lands another hard right hand to start round seven, and again another before Davis gets out of harm’s way.

Davis ends up landing a left punch to the body that hurts Garcia badly. He tries to mask the pain but is ultimately forced to drop to a knee. Following a complete 10-count seeing Garcia unable to stand back up, Gervonta Davis secures the 27th knockout victory of his career.

I became a fan of combat sports when I was 12 years old. I was scrolling through the channels and landed upon Versus, where WEC was televised. Urijah Faber fought Jens Pulver for the second time that night. That's the first fight I ever saw, and I was immediately hooked. So eventually, I began covering the sport in the fourth quarter of 2018, and have since started writing about animals as well.
