Gut Check Championship Series

Gut Check Championship Series: Two New Champs Crowned

Last Saturday, March 26, Delaware’s premier kickboxing promotion, Gut Check Championship Series, returned to the First State with two titles on the line and a dynamically matched card mixed with Glory rules and Muay Thai bouts!

Headlining the card would be a superb matchup for Gut Check’s vacant 135lb Glory rules title. Jai Singh Muay Thai’s, Luke Marshall went to war with Algeo MMA’s, John Wunder, with the crowd hanging on every strike scored. Marshall was able to utilize his reach and kicks successfully, keeping Wunder outside of range when needed and capitalizing on his clinch-work inside. However, when Wunder landed, he landed with flurries and with ill intent. Working his way inside and mixing up punch combinations between the head and midsection. Although a great fight to cap off the event, all three judges scored the bout in favor of Luke Marshall. Declaring him the new Gut Check Championship Series 135lb. Glory Rules champion.

In the co-main event of the evening, Alex Tyler captured the vacant 155lb. Gut Check Championship Series Muay Thai title. Tyler would take on a tough Jake Strickler in a 5 round endeavor that started with a bang. Both fighters heavily exchanged in the early rounds. However, in the later, championship rounds, Tyler’s conditioning would prove to be the determining factor in the fight. Tyler set the pace in the later rounds, controlling the fight while executing his game plan to a clear unanimous decision victory.

With a lone stoppage on the card, Darius Sheffield dismantled Jake Sathmary in only one minute and thirty-eight seconds. Controversially coming in several pounds overweight, Sheffield did what was necessary to shed the excess weight, leading up to the bout itself. While a drastic weight cut may impact how fighters perform, Sheffield showed no signs of wear as he blitzed toward Sathmary with a ferocious combination of punches to the head, dazing Sathmary early. Continuously landing with accuracy, Sheffield finally put Sathmary down for the count that Sathmary couldn’t beat. The referee had seen enough, declaring Darius Sheffield the only winner of the evening to score a knockout.
