Ilia Topuria improves to 13-0, batters and submits Bryce Mitchell at UFC 282

The Ultimate Fighting Championship returns to us tonight, December 10, 2022, for UFC 282, headlined by a vacant light-heavyweight championship affair between no. 3 ranked former champion Jan Blachowicz (29-9) and no. 4 ranked Magomed Ankalaev (18-1).

Co-headlining the event was a lightweight encounter between former Cage Warriors featherweight champion Paddy Pimblett (19-3) and former CFFC featherweight champion Jared Gordon (19-5).

Opening up the main card tonight was a featherweight contest between undefeated contenders in no. 9 ranked Bryce Mitchell (15-0) and no. 14 ranked Ilia Topuria (12-0).

Mitchell had gone 6-0 inside the octagon going into tonight’s bout, while Topuria had gone 4-0 thus far into his UFC tenure. But, someone’s 0 had to go. Continue reading to see how this epic featherweight showcase went down:

Official Result: Ilia Topuria def. Bryce Mitchell via submission (arm-triangle choke) at 3:10 of round two

Topuria is looking very sharp, as he lands a lot of solid, hard punches to the head of Mitchell in the earlier stages of the opening round. Mitchell is eating all of them, but his takedown attempts are getting stuffed and he’s getting boxed up.

Topuria also drops him with a calf kick momentarily, which immediately forces Mitchell to switch stances.

Mitchell is able to time a takedown beautifully with one minute left on the clock and remains on top until the buzzer sounds.

Topuria gets back to his attack in the second, and Mitchell doesn’t seem to have an answer for many of the strikes coming his way. He’s eating some heavy shots, and eventually gets dropped. Topuria swarms him and to our surprise begins out-grappling Mitchell, absolutely mauling him.

Mitchell is fading quickly, and Topuria bullies him down one final time, locking up the arm-triangle choke in the process, becoming the first man to ever officially defeat Bryce Mitchell.

I became a fan of combat sports when I was 12 years old. I was scrolling through the channels and landed upon Versus, where WEC was televised. Urijah Faber fought Jens Pulver for the second time that night. That's the first fight I ever saw, and I was immediately hooked. So eventually, I began covering the sport in the fourth quarter of 2018, and have since started writing about animals as well.
