Invicta FC 36 results – Sorenson vs. Young for featherweight title

Invicta Fighting Championships returns to Memorial Hall in Kansas City, Kan. for Invicta FC 36, headlined by Pam “Bam” Sorenson (7-3) battling “The Striking Viking” Kaitlin Young (10-9-1) for the promotion’s featherweight championship.

Sorensen was last in action at Invicta FC 32, taking on former featherweight champion Felicia Spencer. Sorensen suffered defeat at the time, but gets another crack at Invicta gold after Spencer signed with the UFC and vacated her title earlier this year.

A 12-year veteran of the sport, Young left the cage in 2014 and served as Invicta FC matchmaker before returning to competition last year. Since August, the MMA pioneer has experienced a career resurgence, reeling off three straight wins, including back-to-back stoppages.

This fight would last all five rounds, 25-minutes, before going to the judges for a decision.  Back and forth brawl between each.  Sorenson did well on the feet and had submission attempts.  Young looked great in the middle rounds where she briefly took control of the contest.  Both ladies deserve a ton of credit.  The fight is awarded unanimously to Sorenson who is your new Invicta FC featherweight champion.

Two fighters missed weight yesterday during weigh-ins and were fined 25 percent of their purses as a result.  Co-main event fighter Janaisa Morandin came in over the 116-pound strawweight limit, while Chantel Coates came in just half a pound over the flyweight maximum.

The entire event streamed live on UFC FIGHT PASS beginning at 7 p.m. CT.

Julia Ottolino and Megan Cawley shared the cage for each of their professional mixed martial arts debuts.  The fight which was contested entirely on the feet went to the judges’ scorecards where the decision was ruled unanimously in favor of Ottolino.

Erin Harpe and Auttumn Norton threw down in a hard fought battle that ended with several unanswered questions.  Harpe was hovering above Norton when she dropped down her knee which would open up the nose of Norton.  Whether it was intentional or not is unknown but the blood flowed either way.  As the two ladies stood in the final seconds of the contest, the horn would sound, and then…. a shot from Norton lands and seconds Harpe backwards.  The commentators questioned whether Norton threw that punch as retaliation for the knee or if that too was “accidental.”  We will find out.

Next up, Chantel Coates and Caitlin Sammons stood toe-to-toe at 125-pounds.  Sammons was able to battle through adversity, get a take down, and submit her opponent in the second frame to pick up her second professional win.

Alyse Anderson picked up another win with a split decision win over Katie Saull in the fourth fight of the night.

Stephanie Geltmacher and Victoria Leonardo came into the Invicta FC octagon in a bout scheduled for 125-pounds.  What an amazing fight this was.  Complete bloodbath and war.  Geltmacher comes out on top in a split decision.  Incredible fight. BUT WAIT……. After Geltmacher’s post fight interview, the commission comes in and says the scores were read wrong and Leonardo is the victor.  So odd.

Lindsey VanZandt returned to Invicta FC after an amazing first round submission win over Rena Kubota for Bellator MMA in June.  Unfortunately for the New York native VanZandt, she was on the losing end of a split decision from the judges.  Delboni gets the nod and it will be interesting to see who she is paired up against next.

Former strawweight title challenger Janaisa “Evil Princess” Morandin (10-2) returned to action in the Invicta FC 36 co-main event, welcoming newcomer Emily “Gordinha” Ducote (7-5) to the organization’s 115-pound division. Ducote earned a first round stoppage of Janaisa Morandin.  Very impressive win.  Welcome to Invicta FC Emily Ducote.
