Marvin Vettori bests Jack Hermansson in historic middleweight clash

Marvin Vettori made history in his unanimous decision win against Jack Hermansson in UFC on ESPN 19 headliner this Saturday, Dec. 5.

The two set a record for the most significant strikes landed in UFC middleweight history.

Surging middleweights Jack Hermansson and Marvin Vettori headline UFC on ESPN 19 tonight, Saturday, Dec. 5. After going through three different opponents, Hermansson will square off with Vettori. 

A light-heavyweight bout between long-time veteran Ovince Saint Preux and Jamahal Hill will serve as the co-main event. Hermansson is in the mix of top middleweights after submitting Kelvin Gastelum in the first round at UFC Fight Night 172 back in July. 

“The Joker” is the winner of five of his last six, falling to Jared Cannonier via second-round TKO at UFC Fight Night 160 in September 2019.

Vettori steps in to replace Kevin Holland on just a week’s notice. Vettori entered the picture after Holland tested positive for COVID-19. 

Vettori is on a three-fight win streak, most recently submitting Karl Roberson by first-round TKO at UFC on ESPN 10 in June. His other victories include wins against Andrew Sanchez and Cezar Ferreira. 

The 27-year-old’s last defeat is a split decision loss to now-champion Israel Adesanya at UFC on FOX 29 in April 2018.

ROUND 1

They square up, Hermansson lands a low kick right of the bat. Vettori returns a low kick of his own. Feeling out process, both me attacking the lower half. Vettori coming forward, lands an uppercut. Hermansson goes to the body with a kick. Both men exchanging, Hermansson witht he counter. Vettori puts together a crisp combination. Hermansson comes back with a right. Hermansson fakes a takedown and lands the right hand. Vettori come sin, Hermansson lands a left uppercut. Vettori comes right back. Vettori lands a left hand that puts Hermansson down. Vettori all over him. Vettori pours on the ground and pound, referee Herb Dean is looking closely. Vettori looks for a guillotine, but Hermanson is able to escape. Hermansson recovering on the ground. Vettori still being active, landing ground and pound. Hermansson stays on the ground, recovering. Hermansson gets to his feet and lands an uppercut to close the round.

Hermansson comes out aggressive lands a right hand. Hermansson comes forward now. Hermansson goes high with a kick, Vettori defends. Vettori eats a right, but counters with a combination. Hermansson drops for a takedown. Vettori is defending. Hermansson in on the single leg and gets the takedown. Vettori hits the switch and traditions to the top position. Hermansson attempts an omaplata, but Vettori steps over and escapes. Vettori in Hermansson’s half guard. Vettori gets to his feet, Hermansson remains down. Hermansson gets to his feet as well and eats a jab from Vettori. Both men trading shots here and there. Hermansson lands a right to the body. Hermansson closes the distance and drops for another takedown. Hermansson lands a knee. Vettori slips off the cage. Hermansson goes low again, but takes a counter attack from Vettori.

Hermansson comes out aggressive again in round three. Hermansson active with the low kicks early in round three. Vettori checks a kick. Vettori pops out a jab, but Hermannsson drops for a single-leg takedown. Vettori wizards and defends. Vettori lands a jab. Shortly after, Hermansson shoots again, but Vettori defends. Hermansson finds a home for a right hand. Hermansson looks for another single, Vettori defends it. Vettori lands an uppercut and they clinch. They break, Hermansson lands a left. Hermansson lands on a combination, Vettori eats a right hand. Hermansson getting the better of the striking in round three. Vettori is slowing down. Hermansson learns two jabs. Hermansson rebounds from round one and two.

Vettori lands a one, two combination. Hermansson countering nicely in the fourth. Hermansson eats a left, counters with a left hand. Hermansson goes low, Vettori lands the left hand. Hermansson comes forward and finishes a combination with a left hook. Vettori lets his hands go, puts combinations together. Both men picking up the pace in the final minute of round four.
