Matchmaker Monday following UFC 246

2020 couldn’t have started better for the UFC. Conor McGregor is back in the win column and he did it in big way. If this is any indicator for what we’re going to expect this year then we’re all in for a treat.

Now before we get excited for what’s to come, let’s rewind to this past weekend and find out what should be next for the two men involved in the main event at UFC 246 on this Matchmaker Monday.

Conor McGregor
Result: defeated Donald Cerrone via first round TKO
Next: Jorge Masvidal

First off, let’s tip our hat to “The Notorious” Conor McGregor. What a performance. Whether you like him or not the guy gets it done inside the octagon.

Now if you’re the UFC you have to book the Masvidal fight. Right now they’re the two biggest stars in the sport and for the time being they are in the same weight class.

UFC President Dana White pretty much guaranteed that we will see Conor and Khabib part two. Now before that can happen, Khabib needs to get by Tony Ferguson and nobody should be looking past him.

Conor vs. Khabib will not be able to happen anytime in the short future. So with that being said, McGregor and Masvidal are both fresh and ready to go. Book it now.

Donald Cerrone
Result: lost to Conor McGregor via first round two
Next: Retirement

I hate to say it, but the best option for Cerrone is call it quits. His performance last Saturday was hard to watch and given his last three outings, he should seriously consider retirement. Cerrone did so much for the UFC, including setting records in a number of categories. He is no doubt going to be in the UFC Hall of Fame. Just call it a career.

If Cerrone does decide to fight again, which I’m sure he will, he might want to take a break. In one calendar year he went through five training camps, logged in 11 rounds inside the octagon, and was finished three times.
