UFC on ESPN 10

Matchmaker Monday following UFC on ESPN 10 – What’s next?

UFC on ESPN 10 has come and gone

Cynthia Calvillo has found herself a new home at flyweight as she looked fantastic in her outing against Eye, where she won nearly every single round. The future is definitely bright for Calvillo as she just took out the No.1 contender in the division, according the the UFC’s rankings.

As for Jessica Eye, she’s going to have to take a long look as where she will go for here. She’s one of the best fighter’s in the world at 125 pounds and she competed against Valentina Shevchenko for the UFC title. However, she has missed weight in her last two fights.

Now given all of that, it’s time to go to the drawing board and figure out what’s next for the two ladies on this Matchmaker Monday.

Cynthia Calvillo
Result: defeated Jessica Eye by unanimous decision at UFC on ESPN 10
Next: Katlyn Chookagian

After struggling to make the 115 pound strawweight limit, Calvillo’s decision to move up to 125 pounds was brilliant as she took out the UFC’s No. 1 contender with ease. Now when the UFC updates their rankings, Calvillo will most likely not be No. 1, but she’ll definitely be close.

Personally, given the gap between flyweight queen Valentina Shevchenko and all the other title challengers, I wouldn’t have a problem with Calvillo sliding right into the title fight. Only problem there is that Shevchenko is expected to fight Joanne Calderwood.

Calvillo does a hold a win over Calderwood and now with Eye on her resume, I feel it is good enough for a title fight, but I don’t think she wants to sit around and wait. She wants to be active and get back in there as soon as possible, so up next should be another title challenger in Kaitlyn Chookagian.

Chookagian just defeated Antonia Shevchenko, who is Valentina’s sister, at UFC on ESPN 9 in May. After her win, she also said she wanted to be active and get back to the octagon as soon as she can. After Saturday’s main event she called for a fight with Calvillo and I think that is the direction the UFC will go in.

Jessica Eye
Result: lost to Cynthia Calvillo by unanimous decision at UFC on ESPN 10
Next: Jennifer Maia

The pick of Maia being next for Eye is simply from a rankings stand point, but honestly I think Eye needs to take some time off and figure out her weight cutting issues.

She’s missed weight in two straight fights and it’s not a good look for her. Before the UFC opened up the flyweight division, Eye competed at bantamweight, but 135 pounds was not her weight class, as she posted a 1-5 record with one no contest.

I think Eye’s future is at 125 pounds, but right now some time off seems to get a game plan in place in how she’s going to make the weight.
