Cynthia Calvillo wins her flyweight debut over No.1 contender Jessica Eye

The UFC remains in Las Vegas, Nevada for the third-straight week tonight, Saturday, June 13.

UFC on ESPN 10 takes place inside the UFC Apex and is headlined by a women’s flyweight bout between Jessica Eye and Cynthia Calvillo.

Eye missed weight ahead of the fight by weighing in at 126.25, which was a quarter-pound over the weight limit. As a result of her failing to make weight, she will forfeit 25% of her purse to Calvillo. This is the second fight in a row Eye has missed weight.

Aside from struggles against the scale, Eye has been highly successful at flyweight. She’s 4-1 in the division, with her lone loss coming in the title fight against champion Valentina Shevchenko. The official UFC rankings have her ranked as the No. 1 contender in the division.

Meanwhile, Calvillo will be making her UFC flyweight debut after having brutal weight cuts down to strawweight, in which she missed weight twice. While at strawweight, Calvillo made a name for herself going 5-1-1 at 115 pounds. Calvillo will come into the fight as a slight betting favor.

Here’s a round-by-round break down of their fight at UFC on ESPN 10.

Round 1

Calvillo lands a nice jab 30 seconds into the fight as the two are starting the fight by feeling each other out. Not a lot of action early on with both fighters throwing jabs at one another. Neither seems to want to come out swinging hard as a full 25 minutes await them. Eye is controlling the center of the octagon as we come to the finals two minutes of the round.

Both women are having their moments in a very close round, which isn’t the most action packed round. The fight stayed standing the whole first opening round and it was a close round to score. Eye seemed to be a bit more polished as the stand up favors her.

Round 2

Calvillo wasn’t happy with the opening round and she comes out a little more urgent in the second round. Eye is still winning the exchanges on the feet and Calvillo still hasn’t looked for a takedown yet.

Following the opening minute of the round, Calvillo takes her first shot of the fight and scores a takedown.

Calvillo is in full control on the ground, Eye attempts to get up, but Calvillo will not let go of the clinch and ends up getting Eye right back to the canvas. Calvillo looked fantastic in the clinch and easily takes round two.

Round 3

Eye’s corner wants her to let her hands fly. Early on Eye is trying the keep Calvillo at bay and prevent her from shooting in. Calvillo lands a beautiful leg kick with 3:30 left in the round, which is lacking action.

Calvillo is staying busy and has landed a few nice jabs throughout he round. Both ladies are starting to throw with a bit more force than the first two rounds.

Calvillo gets a huge takedown as the we come to the last minute of the round and that takedown will steal her the round.

Round 4

Calvillo wastes no time shooting in, as she gets a takedown within the first minute and immediately starts to go to work. She is in beautiful position and is landing shots.

Calvillo controlled Eye on the ground until Eye eventually got back up to the feet with about two minutes left in the round. While Eye is back on the feet, she’s clearly losing the round and Eye is going to have to do some work.

Eye is starting to land on the feet as were come to the final minute of the round.

Calvillo’s work on the ground gets her another round. While round four was close, Calvillo’s ground work gets it done.

Round 5

Fifth and final round is underway. Eye is busy to start off the round and her corner is asking her to pick it up as she maybe losing the fight.

The two are staying on the feet and the last round is favoring Eye as we have three minutes left in the fight.

Calvillo is starting to land shots on the feet and Eye’s corner is begging for her to start stepping forward. Calvillo is definitely staying busier in the round and she’s starting have success on the feet.

One minute left in the round and Calvillo shoots in and lands another takedown in what is a close round.

Eye gets back to her feet as the fight comes to an end, but Calvillo was busier and she scored a takedown. Another round for the Calvillo.
