Maynard James Keenan Earns BJJ Brown Belt

Front man for the bands Tool, A Perfect Circle, and Puscifer, Maynard James Keenan has earned his brown belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. Keenan is known to have been practicing the sport for years and seeing him grow has been a fun thing for me as a fan of both Maynard James Keenan’s work and martial arts.

Keenan has gone on Joe Rogan’s podcast multiple times and the topic of Jiu Jitsu always comes up with the mutual interest between the two and the sport itself. Keenan has gone through the story of his and how he’s battled injuries throughout his training. But, Keenan has persisted and earned his brown belt, a major accomplishment in the sport.

Maynard James Keenan and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu

The promotion to brown belt is just the latest of Maynard James Keenan and his Jiu Jitsu journey. Keenan has co-founded the Jiu Jitsu school he trains at and has really just taken to the sport.

My favorite Keenan-does-jiu-jitsu story hails from 1997. During a set with Tool, a fan rushes the stage and Keenan put the fan in a hold and sat on him for ten minutes. The video is above and is spliced well with Keenan telling the story on Joe Rogan’s podcast.

Not long ago, right before Glover Teixeira captured the light heavyweight title, I also wrote a piece based around the lyrics from Keenan in his song “The Humbling River” from Puscifer. I talked about how Teixeira has been everywhere in the mixed martial arts world but has yet to “cross the river” (capture the UFC belt). If you’re interested in that, you should check it out here!

Keenan getting promoted to brown belt is a fantastic achievement and we at MyMMANews want to congratulate him on the major accomplishment! Thanks for reading!
