Dustin Poirier defeats Dan Hooker in potential "Fight of the Year" candidate

Mike Brown believes Dustin Poirier deserves $1 million pay day in next fight

The resume for highly-ranked contender and former interim lightweight contender Dustin Poirier is a strong one. With wins over the likes of Justin Gaethje, Anthony Pettis, Max Holloway, Eddie Alvarez and most recently, Dan Hooker, there is no denying how good Poirier is, and now his coach would like to see him rewarded for it.

Poirier’s coach Mike Brown, who is well-known for his stellar work at American Top Team made an appearance on ‘The Luke Thomas Show‘ on Monday, and discussed why he feels that Poirier deserves a $1 million pay day in his next fight.

In his most recent win over Hooker, Poirier took home the most earnings of the event, netting $300,000 with his win bonus included, but his coach believes a much bigger check should come next and that next fight should be a potential title fight.

“If it were me, it’s a title shot…in a perfect world if Gaethje wins [over Nurmagomedov], in a perfect world, that’s what would happen. That would be everything going best-case scenario, but whoever he fights he deserves a raise and deserves a lot of money for what he’s doing, every time it’s craziness, every fight is wild, there’s never a boring minute. I think he deserves a million dollar pay day.”

As Brown mentioned, Poirier has been plenty of wars inside the Octagon that don’t have any boring moments, but he admits that these aren’t good for the former interim champion.

“Yeah this is not good for you. This is why this guy deserves a lot of money, this guy deserves to be paid. We all want to see him. As a fight fan, him and Gaethje are the two most exciting guys in the organization, they went head-to-head already and it was Fight Of The Year, I mean every fight for him is a Fight Of The Year candidate. It’s concerning because you don’t know which one will be the last one, these guys are doing a lot of damage to each other, it’s definitely not good for you.”
