Raquel Pennington spoils Marion Reneau’s birthday with decision victory

Raquel Pennington earns unanimous decision win over Marion Reneau.

The world’s largest MMA promotion is back in Las Vegas, Nevada for the fourth-consecutive week tonight, Saturday, June 20.

UFC on ESPN 11 takes place inside the UFC Apex and is headlined by heavyweight contenders Curtis Blaydes and Alexander Volkov. The co-main event features a featherweight clash between Shane Burgos and Josh Emmett.

Right before the main and co-main events, a women’s bantamweight featuring Raquel Pennington and Marion Reneau took place.

Pennington (10-8) is fighting on the same card as her fiancee Tecia Torres, who won her fight on the preliminary card. Pennington is coming off a loss to former UFC champion Holly Holm in January. She is a former title challenger, losing to Amanda Nunes in May 2018. The UFC veteran has fought five UFC champions throughout her career, earning wins over two of them. The wins came against Miesha Tate and Jessica Andrade.

Reneau (9-5-1) is a veteran of the sport, as the birthday girl, who turns 43-year-old today, is in her tenth year as a professional. She is currently on two-fight losing streak and her last outing she lost to Yana Kunitskaya by unanimous decision.

Round 1

Reneau establishes her jab to start off the fight as two come out in a feeling out process.

90 seconds into the fight Pennington lands a few nice shots and works the clinch pushing Reneau against the cage. The two would break from the clinch, but Pennington would quickly pushes Reneau back against the cage and land some nice short strikes, including a few nice knees.

Pennington is having a lot of success with the knees to the body, but Reneau stays calm against the cage and flips Pennington around and is now in control of the clinch. While Reneau briefly took control, she couldn’t get a takedown as Pennington takes the opening frame.

Round 2

Pennington comes out land a few nice combos before Reneau goes to the clinch and puts Pennington’s back against the cage. Reneau goes tries for a knee, but lands a low blow and the referee calls for a pause in action for Pennington to catch her breath following the low blow.

The fight starts back up as the opening minute of the round is over. Pennington quickly starts going to work on the feet landing a few nice jabs.

Reneau again goes to the clinch, but Pennington isn’t bothered by it, as she is landing knees and stuffing takedown attempts. Pennington is having a lot of success with knees and she’s landed several key body shots.

Reneau tries for a takedown, but Pennington again isn’t phased and ends up on top of Reneau on the ground. The two would make it back to the feet and Pennington pushes Reneau against the cage and lands a bunch of strikes to close out the round.

Round 3

Reneau comes out urgent in the last round and gets an early takedown, but Pennington isn’t in danger and is slowly making her way back to her feet.

Pennington gets to the feet and breaks the clinch and lands a nice right hand over the top. A few seconds later Pennington lands a nice elbow that marks up Reneau’s forehead.

Pennington is in control of the round and halfway through the final round, it appears she is on her way to another win.

Final two minutes is all Pennington, as she picks up career win No. 11
