UFC 246 results: Aleksei Oleinik picks up 46th career submission win

On Saturday night, Jan. 18, 2020, the UFC kicks off their calendar year with UFC 246. The event takes place at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas and will be headlined by the return of Conor McGregor taking on Donald Cerrone in a welterweight bout.

In the heavyweight division, Maurice Greene and the 71-fight veteran Aleksei Oleinik are set to throw down. Greene would recently have his three fight winning streak snapped at UFC Singapore in October by Sergey Pavlovich via first round TKO. “The Crochet Boss”, a season 28 participant on The Ultimate Fighter, has victories over Michel Batista, Jeff Hughes and Junior Albini in his UFC career.

Oleinik is looking to snap a two-fight losing streak for the first time in his UFC career. “The Boa Constrictor” was finished in the first round by Alistair Overeem and Walt Harris heading into Saturday night’s showdown with Greene. The 42-year-old Oleinik holds 45 submission wins in his professional mixed martial arts career.

They touch gloves and Maurice Greene lands a huge kick early, dropping Oleinik. Back to the feet they go and Oleinik lands a right hand. Greene swings for the fences and Oleinik grabs a reverse bear hug of sorts and brings it to the mat — not where Greene wants to be. Oleinik in side control and Greene looking to explode off the fence with both feet. Over three minutes for Oleinik to work and looks for a neck crank. Greene gets back to full guard and looks for a triangle. Oleinik escapes and is on top in full guard. Greene throws up another triangle attempt which helps him get back to his feet. Oleinik takes the back again and drags it back down. Greene gets back to full guard momentarily, but Oleinik gets to full mount. Under two minutes to go and Greene is in a horrible position. Big elbow from Oleinik and is locks in an Ezekiel choke Greene trying to hang on here for the next 50 seconds. Greene starts landing punches, unreal! Under 10 seconds to go and Greene survives. They clinch and Greene lands a huge knee and a high kick. Oleinik shoots for a double and Greene defends for a moment. Oleinik gets Greene to the mat as both guys are breathing heavy. Oleinik looking for another Ezekiel choke but his arms are mush right now. Greene trying to scramble but Oleinik maintains position. Greene looking for a kimura and a sweep. Oleinik does a nice job staying in a good position. Final 90 seconds of the round and both guys are trying to work hard. Oleinik gets to mount and now looking for an armbar. Greene is on top trying to get out of this bad position. Final 30 seconds and Greene is forced to tap out and is quite frustrated. 46th submission win for the 42-year-old Oleinik.
