UFC 289 co-main event: Charles Oliveira ends the streak, TKO’s Beneil Dariush in four minutes

The Ultimate Fighting Championship returns to us tonight, June 10, 2023, for UFC 289, going down live from the Rogers Arena in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.

Headlining the event is a title bout between longtime UFC bantamweight champion Amanda Nunes (22-5) and no. 5 ranked Irene Aldana (14-6).

Co-headlining the event was an epic lightweight contest between no. 1 ranked former UFC lightweight champion Charles Oliveira (33-9, 1 NC) and no. 4 ranked Beneil Dariush (22-4-1).

Oliveira just had his 11-fight win streak snapped last October when he lost the belt to Islam Makhachev, while Dariush came into tonight’s co-main event clash on an eight-fight win streak.

Official Result: Charles Oliveira def. Beneil Dariush via TKO (punches) at 4:10 of round one

Oliveira takes the center once the bout begins, landing a nice head kick early on in the bout.

Dariush ends up taking him down, which makes things interesting. Oliveira goes for a leg lock, unsuccessfully, and Dariush lands some good shots from top position, though Oliveira lands few good hammerfists off his back himself.

Once Oliveira gets back to his feet he gets to work, trying for that head kick again before landing a series of right hands that stun Dariush. From here it only took some good positioning and a few follow up shots to stop the surging contender.

Charles Oliveira debuted in the UFC with a record of 12-0, and would go 10-8, 1 NC through his first 19 bouts with the promotion. ‘Do Bronx’ has since gone 12-1 over his last 13, securing 12 finishes in that time.

I became a fan of combat sports when I was 12 years old. I was scrolling through the channels and landed upon Versus, where WEC was televised. Urijah Faber fought Jens Pulver for the second time that night. That's the first fight I ever saw, and I was immediately hooked. So eventually, I began covering the sport in the fourth quarter of 2018, and have since started writing about animals as well.
