UFC 289: Mike Malott impresses with stoppage victory over Adam Fugitt

The Ultimate Fighting Championship returns to us tonight, June 10, 2023, for UFC 289, going down live from the Rogers Arena in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.

Headlining the event is a title bout between longtime UFC bantamweight champion Amanda Nunes (22-5) and no. 5 ranked Irene Aldana (14-6).

Co-headlining the event is an epic lightweight contest between no. 1 ranked former UFC lightweight champion Charles Oliveira (33-9, 1 NC) and no. 4 ranked Beneil Dariush (22-4-1).

Our feature fight of the evening came in the welterweight division between a pair of finishers in Mike Malott (10-1-1) and Adam Fugitt (9-4). All nine of Malott’s wins come via stoppage in round one, while eight of Fugitt’s nine wins also come via finish.

Official Result: Mike Malott def. Adam Fugitt via submission (guillotine choke) at 1:06 of round two

Malott hurts Fugitt with a body kick early on in the first. He continues attacking with the right kick, before adding some right hands to them. Fugitt tries to tie up with Malott but is immediately taken down. Fugitt makes his way back up, but is taken down again and just completely out-classed through the first five minutes.

Malott picks up right where he left off in the first once the second begins, landing a hard right hook-left hook combination that drops Fugitt. From here Malott jumps on a guillotine choke and finishes the fight in the second. Mike Malott is a good example of unknown talents that are very, very good.

I became a fan of combat sports when I was 12 years old. I was scrolling through the channels and landed upon Versus, where WEC was televised. Urijah Faber fought Jens Pulver for the second time that night. That's the first fight I ever saw, and I was immediately hooked. So eventually, I began covering the sport in the fourth quarter of 2018, and have since started writing about animals as well.
