Austin Gomez Tops Yianni Diakomihalis In Dual Meet

Yianni Diakomihalis has been beaten for the second time in his collegiate career. In today’s dual meet between Cornell and Wisconsin, third ranked Austin Gomez of Wisconsin defeated the nearly perfect Yianni Diakomihalis by a score of 9-3. The last time Diakomihalis lost was in 2017 against Jaydin Eierman.

Yianni Diakomihalis hasn’t lost since that Eierman match in 2017, his freshman year. He’s started his career at Cornell at 94-1 going into his senior year. But it was Gomez who shocked the wrestling world by beating Diakomihalis in his season debut.

Austin Gomez just made things more interesting

Austin Gomez has struggled in the past against Diakomihalis. His foe has been a three time National Champion and in the two’s last match, Gomez lost 12-6. The win was out of left field and now that Austin Gomez has beat Diakomihalis, he’s sure to jump up in the rankings and could take that top spot.

Austin Gomez transferred as a medical sophomore in 2021 from Iowa State to Wisconsin. Now leading the charge at 149, Gomez has put the entire NCAA on notice: the Badgers are the real deal.

Last season, Gomez surprised many with a win over Sammy Sasso of Ohio State in the NCAA Championships. He faced off with Bryce Andonian, the Virginia Tech wrestler who came in third last year. With an overall 55-11, Gomez won All-American honors last season finishing fourth in the tournament. Other Wisconsin wrestlers winning the honors were Dean Hamiti at 165 pounds and Eric Barnett at 125 pounds.

In his career, Gomez proven to be quite the wrestler. He’s got wins over Sasso, Ridge Lovett, John Erneste, and now Yianni Diakomihalis.

The NCAA season is just beginning and with Gomez beating Diakomihalis, things are wide open at 149. Stay posted to My MMA News for all the latest NCAA wrestling news. Thanks for reading.
