Cris Cyborg KO's Sinead Kavanagh, makes third defense of title at Bellator 271

Cris Cyborg says she is “disappointed” Amanda Nunes rematch is off the table due to rival’s retirement

Bellator women’s featherweight champion Cris Cyborg says she is “disappointed” that an Amanda Nunes rematch is off the table due to her rival’s retirement.

Cyborg is considered by many to be the greatest women’s 145lbs fighter of all time, but back at UFC 232 in December 2018, Nunes knocked her out in the first round in an upset. Cyborg hasn’t lost since then while fighting mostly in Bellator, while Nunes has continued her reign of dominance while competing inside the Octagon.

Although both women were in different promotions and a rematch was hard-pressed to happen, there was always the small chance it could have since they were both active fighters. However, since Nunes has now retired from the sport, we won’t be seeing these two run it back anytime soon, and that disappoints Cyborg.

Speaking on her YouTube channel, Cyborg explained her emotions after hearing that Nunes retired from MMA.

“I don’t want to say upset, but the right word I think is disappointed. I had one goal in my heart to make the rematch before I retire or she retires. I think a lot of fans were asking for this too. Even Julianna Peña, you see a lot of people say, ‘Oh you left before the third fight.’ But after we fought, I was 14 years undefeated. I think the rematch was gonna be great, but now I don’t know,” Cyborg said (via MMAjunkie.com).

Cyborg vs. Nunes was one of the most exciting women’s MMA fights of all time, and a rematch would have been fantastic to watch as well, but we won’t be seeing it anytime soon now that Nunes has stepped away from the game.

Are you disappointed that Cris Cyborg and Amanda Nunes won’t have a rematch now that Nunes has retired from MMA, and who do you think would have won had they fought again?
