Gulf Coast MMA 11 results: Brandon Davis vs. John Huber

Brandon Davis made his first bantamweight title defense by earning a first-round TKO win against Josh Huber in the Gulf Coast MMA 11 main event on Saturday, Aug. 14. 

The former UFC featherweight put Huber to the floor with a kick to the body. The referee hesitated to step in right away, but eventually called for the stoppage.

Brandon Davis vs. John Huber Preview

Davis is unbeaten in all three of his GCMMA appearances since being cut by the UFC in 2019. Davis most recently returned to featherweight to defeat Rey Trujillo by unanimous decision at Gulf Coast MMA 9 last March. 

His other GCMMA victories include a submission win over Jonathan Eiland and a decision nod over Brad Kelly.

The 31-year-old finished 2-5 in his first UFC tenure. His only two octagon victories consisted of wins over Randy Costa and Steven Peterson. 

Huber is an experienced veteran in his own right, having mixed it up with the likes of Cory Sandhagen and Zvia Lazishvili. The 35-year-old is coming off a decision loss to Lazishvili at LFA 79 in November 2019.

The defeat snapped a six-fight win streak.

Francis Marshall takes a major step up in competition in his second appearance at 150 pounds. The unbeaten prospect faces a 54-fight veteran in Trujillo. 

Marshall is perfect with three rear-naked choke victories, including two under the GCMMA banner. 

Trujillo is on a long 10-fight losing streak. His last victory is a split decision win against Donald Sanchez at Rocks Xtreme MMA 23 in March 2018. Trujillo is experienced though, having fought UFC talent like Daniel Pineda, Matt Bessette, Kevin Aguilar, Chas Skelly and Davis. 

Kicking off the main card are middleweights James Horne and David Lopez.

James Horne [4-5] vs. David Lopez [1-1]

David Lopez took his time getting tot the cage, but made quick work of Horne.

After an emotional walkout, Lopez earned the first-round TKO win.

Lopez landed a spinning back fist and muscled Horne to the ground. Lopez backed off, forcing Horne to stand. Horne landed a nice knee to the face off the clinch.

Lopez rocks Horne with a right hand. Horne’s eyes go to the back of his head. Referee lets this one go.

Lopez asks Horne to stand, but Horne stays on his back. Lopez rains down ground and pound for the finish.

Lopez improves to 2-1 and Horne falls to 4-6.

Rey Trujillo [24-30] vs. Francis Marshall [3-0]

Francis Marshall dominated Rey Trujillo on his way to a unanimous decision victory.

Marshall getting the better of the exchanges on the feet. Marshall is finding a home for the right hand.

Marshall shoots for a takedown late, lands in Trujillo’s full guard. Trujillo gives up his back. Trujillo spins and ends up on top to end round one. Dominant round one for Marshall though.

Referee takes a look at Trujillo between rounds. Doctor comes in, appears to be a broken nose.

Marshall comes forward landing punches and drops levels to earn his second takedown. Trujillo is on his butt, against the cage.

Trujillo gets to his feet, but Marshall trips him back to the canvas. Trujillo gets back up, but again, Trujillo trips him again.

Marshall sneaks in a few elbows. Trujillo gets to his feet, but not without eating some punches. Marshall lands another takedown. Trujillo is bleeding from his nose.

Marshall ends round two on top.

Marshall is swarming Trujillo in round three. Trujillo is taken down again.

Trujillo gets to his feet, but Marshall punishes him with punches. Marshall takes Trujillo down again.

Fight ends with Marshall on Trujillo’s back.

Marshall remains unbeaten at 4-0, while Trujillo drops to 24-31.

Brandon Davis [C 13-8] vs. Josh Huber [24-11]

A kick tot he body is what Brandon Davis need to make his first bantamweight title defense against Josh Huber.

Davis takes the center of the cage, more active to start on his feet. Davis puts Huber down with a kick to the body. Davis swarms Huber and it takes awhile for the referee to step i, but this one is over.

Davis retains title as he moves to 14-8. Huber falls to 24-12.
