The life of a Muay Thai fighter
Professional Muay Thai fighters begin their training while they are very young. In a true Muay Thai fighter, tremendous respect for royalty is deeply ingrained. There would be no Thailand (Land of the Free) today if it hadn’t been for the strong and fearless leaders of the past. Muay Thai fighters are aware of the ties that exist between the sport, the monarchy, and Thailand’s history.

Muay Thai is traditionally taught by a master to a student. As evidenced in the video, fighters exhibit a great deal of respect for their seniors. Manachai has been motivated by top-level fighters and aspires to be like his senior, Saenchai, who is also the name of his gym.
Trainers assist in the development of combat skills, mental toughness, and self-confidence. They instill focus, commitment, and passion in their students. Masters bestow blessings on students for their safety, success, and ability to battle effectively. Before each battle, fighters perform a Wai Kru rite to honor their coaches.
The pre-fight ritual also aims to conjure protection for both the fighter and their opponent; while victory is desirable, honor is paramount. Fighters congratulate each other and show respect to their opponent’s trainer whether they win or lose.
Muay Thai and spirituality
Religion is deeply ingrained in daily Thai life, as well as Muay Thai culture. The mongkorn (headdress), prajioud (armband), and shorts all have cultural and spiritual importance. These are traditionally blessed to bring good fortune and protection.
Thailand has a strong belief in spirits and many superstitions. The Ram Muay is a Muay Thai ritual that pays homage to spirits. There are few practical anxieties before entering a Muay Thai ring in the regulated world of Muay Thai. When fighters went to war in the past, however, supernatural favors were far more important.
Muay Thai training used to take place at military barracks and temples. Muay Thai masters are frequently monks who teach both fighting methods and religious beliefs.
Muay Thai and gambling
Muay Thai is Thailand’s sole legal form of gambling (apart from lotteries). Gambling isn’t always about the fun; some gamble with the hopes of striking it rich and getting their break. Gambling can be a major source of income for some Thais, albeit a risky one.
