Pittsburgh boxers heading to Olympic Team Trials

Two amateur boxers from Pittsburgh are on the verge of creating a historic moment. These talented young national champions have successfully secured their spots in the 2024 U.S. Olympic Team Trials for boxing, which will take place in Louisiana.

The relentless commitment and unwavering determination displayed by Sonny Taylor and Trinity Burke, who are affiliated with Team 412, have finally come to fruition. Their countless hours of hard work in the boxing ring have secured them a chance to compete in the upcoming 2024 U.S. Olympic Team Trials for boxing. Embarking on their journey on Friday, they will be heading to Lafayette, Louisiana, where the trials are set to kick off on Monday.

With Pittsburgh being known as a gritty and tough sports city with die-hard fans dating back to the legendary years of the Pittsburgh Steelers “Steel Curtain,” Taylor and Burke can bet Pittsburgh fans and Pennsylvanians will continue to show their support and watching punch for punch at the sports betting sites in the Quaker State and television sports networks.

Delbert “Sonny” Taylor expressed his elation by stating, “I am overjoyed. This serves as a testament that diligent efforts yield fruitful outcomes.” Trinity Burke, reflecting on her decision to pursue boxing, shared, “Initially, I found the idea of trying it out intriguing.” Acknowledging the challenges, Burke affirmed, “Although it is undeniably demanding, the rewards will undoubtedly justify the hardships.”

Paul Spadafora, the world champion boxer from Pittsburgh, has been training two promising boxers at the 3rd Avenue Boxing Gym Downtown. Taylor, who secured a junior Olympics national title, and Burke, a two-time national champion, are preparing diligently for the upcoming Olympic trials. Spadafora holds them in high regard, praising their dedication and hard work.

He believes they have what it takes to succeed and encourages them to approach the trials with a winning mindset. James Hoy, the head coach of Team 412, expresses his utmost pride in this achievement, considering it a testament to the strength of the Pittsburgh boxing community.

Taylor and Burke will be dedicating a week of their time in Louisiana to compete for a position on Team USA. Meanwhile, the National Championships will witness the participation of six young boxers from Team 412, aged between 13 and 17.
