Regian Eersel ONE: Winter Warriors post-event interview

Regian Eersel defended his ONE lightweight kickboxing world championship against Islam Murtazaev in the main event of ONE: Winter Warriors. This split decision victory transpired at Singapore Indoor Stadium on December 3rd.

Eersel took part in an internal Q&A session curated by ONE Championship after the contest. A few excerpts from that are below.

Thoughts on the ONE: Winter Warriors title defense performance overall

“Thank you. I’m not pleased. It was not my best fight. I think it was one of my worst fights. But I’m glad I got the win.”

“Yeah, I’m just gonna watch the fight over and over and over. Take a look at my mistakes and what I can improve. And I think it’s maybe my schedule before the fight. It was too busy I think and that’s why. Because fighting is also mental. So this was a mental fight for me also. So I’m going to work on it.”

Feelings on if he is starting to build a nice legacy here

“Yes, I think I’m building a nice legacy. I’m undefeated I think for five or six years now. 18 fights total win streak. So I think building my legacy, fairly good (laughs).”

The banner years of the 90’s K1 scene and if this is a new golden age for kickboxing

“I think so. Especially if you look at the seventy-kilo decision for ONE Championship. I think they bring the best fighters of the world together. Like the K1 back in the days. So I think ONE Championship is a new era of kickboxing.”

Beating Nieky Holzken twice and if Regian Eersel thinks they will meet again

“It’s a possibility. I read that he signed a new contract with ONE Championship. I think six fights and I think one fight is a title shot. So I’m still the champion. So we’ll see by that time if he gets a title shot or not.”
