Tony Ferguson has lucked out with his broken orbital bone as he will not require surgery. The former interim lightweight champion posted a video on Instagram in which the caption said he did not surgery. Ferguson’s team also confirmed to MMA Junkie that Ferguson would avoid surgery.
Ferguson (25-4) took a lot of damage in his interim lightweight championship loss to Justin Gaethje (22-2) at UFC 249 last Saturday. The fight was stopped in the fifth round and there is no indication of when exactly Ferguson suffered the injury.
As a result of the injury, Ferguson will miss some time, but his timeline maybe quicker now that he won’t need surgery.
Tony Ferguson had his 12 fight winning streak snapped in the loss to Gaethje. The winning streak was a UFC record within the division. Originally, Ferguson was scheduled to fight Khabib Nurmagomedov on April 18, but the coronavirus pandemic forced Nurmagomedov out of the fight. Gaethje replaced Nurmagomedov and then the fight was pushed back to May 9.
