Tony Ferguson suffers orbital fracture in loss to Justin Gaethje

Tony Ferguson wants to ‘close out 2020 in style’ by fighting Michael Chandler in December

Tony Ferguson is looking to fight Michael Chandler before the year is up.

Ferguson was linked to a fight with Dustin Poirier, but with “The Diamond” set to fight Conor McGregor, Ferguson has turned his attention to Michael Chandler. It no doubt makes sense and a scrap both men have shown interest in. So, UFC 256 losing its headliner, Ferguson is looking to help beef up the card by welcoming Michael Chandler to the UFC.

“Time-2-Rise” # D’arceKnightRises … Again. Lets Close out 2020 In Style. Michael Chandler you Putz, Ya Asked For It. # AddedToTheListBish’ CSO December. @danawhite @seanshelby @ufc @MikeChandlerMMA #MyMat -Champ,” Ferguson tweeted.

Tony Ferguson has not fought since May of this year. There, he suffered a fifth-round TKO loss to Justin Gaethje for the interim lightweight title. It was his first loss since 2012 stretching 12 fights. During that run, he beat the likes of Rafael dos Anjos, Kevin Lee, Anthony Pettis, Donald Cerrone, and Edson Barboza among others. He is also the former interim lightweight champion but due to a variety of reasons has never fought for the undisputed title.

Chandler is currently on a two-fight winning streak with both coming by first-round KO over Sidney Outlaw and Benson Henderson. Before that, he suffered a TKO loss to Patricio Freire to lose his lightweight title. In his career, he has notable wins over Eddie Alvarez, Patricky Freire, Marcin Held, and Goiti Yamaguchi among others.

Having Ferguson and Chandler fight at UFC 256 would no doubt help the year-end pay-per-view. After losing the main event between Amanda Nunes and Megan Anderson, the main card could use another big name. Having Ferguson and Chandler on the main card would no doubt add more PPV buys and help determine a possible No. 1 contender at lightweight.

For now, it is uncertain if Tony Ferguson and Michael Chandler will indeed fight in December.
