ONE FC welterweight champion Ben “Funky” Askren returns to action on April 27 to defend his title against Luis “Sapo” Santos at ONE FC 27, in Manila, Philippines.
Askren (14-0) will be fighting for the third time under ONE FC, and is arguably one of the best welterweight fighters in the world. His dominant wrestling and fighting style has been criticized by some, including UFC president Dana White. White has made previous comments about Askren not being “exciting” enough to compete in the UFC.
In the defense of the former Olympic wrestler, Askren has finished eight of his 14 wins (four TKO, four submissions). Both of Askren’s fights in the ONE FC promotion only lasted one round, and a total of 5:45 between the two bouts. He has also won four straight fights now via TKO or submission, increasing his argument that he can finish fights.
Luis Santos has fought for many promotions and has accrued 70(61-9) fights in his 15-year career. The 35 year old American Top Team and Sapo Fight Team member has won seven straight fights. Santos won his debut in July’s ONE FC 22 card when he defeated Bakhtiyar Abbasov in just 53 seconds via TKO from strikes. Santos has 35 TKO/KO and 13 submission victories to add to his long fight resume.
No other fights have been announced for this card at the moment.
