Danny Kingad On Rebounding From Fighting The GOAT

Danny Kingad takes on Wei Xie in a flyweight fight. The bout goes at ONE Championship: Fire & Fury. Kingad vs Xie emanates from Mall Of Asia Arena in Manila, Philippines and goes Friday, January 31st. Kingad is looking to get back on track after losing to consensus greatest flyweight of all time, Demetrious Johnson. That loss ousted Kingad from the flyweight grand prix and he’s looking to reinsert himself amongst the top-ranked fighters in that weight class with a big win on Friday.

Danny Kingad is not just stoked for this fight but for an opportunity to perform for his fellow compatriots. Kingad said, “I am very excited for competing in front of my fellow Kababayan. Hearing them shout and cheer will be one of the reasons why us Philippine athletes can gain our confidence.”

The aforementioned loss to Demetrious Johnson wasn’t something that caused irreparable damage to Kingad’s confidence. In fact, he seems to feel almost the exact opposite sentiment. Kingad stated, “It feels so great competing against a legend. DJ, before it was just my dream to meet him. But ONE Championship gave me a chance to give against him. I’m really proud with that.”

This Mighty Mouse loss was something that taught Kingad a lot and imparted a certain sense of confidence onto him. This fight has a different stylistic makeup to it and Kingad theorizes that means the bulk of this fight will be contested in the standup. Kingad remarked, “My thoughts on my opponent is he’s a striker. I’m ready for him to exchange strikes with a Chinese guy. I know he’s also good but I’m better than him.”

He has channeled this energy into preparing for Wei Xie and Kigad has done so with some of the most elite coaches/ trainers in the Asian MMA scene. Kingad quipped, “I’m training with the best and the beasts. I train with reigning champion Joshua Pacio…. Coach Mark, we have a lot of Boxing coaches that help us improve more on our striking skills.”

In summation, Danny Kingad said “I would like to thank all my supporters and all of the people who keep on supporting ONE Championship. My Kababayans, I will get this win and in the end, the referee will raise my hand.”
