Exclusive: Jillian DeCoursey Talks Phoenix Tournament on Fight Week

Interview with Jillian DeCoursey above

Jillian DeCoursey (4-3) is one of eight fighters competing in Invicta FC’s Phoenix Tournament on June 11. She has already crossed hands with current atomweight champion Alesha Zappitella and a few other ladies in the tournament that might give her an edge come fight night. With a name like “Lionheart”, a tournament like this is something that is right up her alley.

DeCoursey was kind enough to give My MMA News some time while she was in quarantine for fight week and she talked about where she stands in the tournament, fan voting, and getting ready for something like this while COVID-19 is still around.

However, one thing that she might have as an edge in this tournament is having fought a few of the other competitors before. When asked about having a possible advantage, DeCoursey said; “ I think it does because I have wins against all of them. So, just like from the confidence perspective it’s like; okay obviously you know it’s been some time, it’s been a few years since we fought. So, like myself, like everyone’s going to improve. You kind of know their style, right? You know what it feels like to be in the cage with that person. So, I think that side of it helps.”

As far as getting ready for the Phoenix Tournament, DeCoursey has done plenty of grappling tournaments, but her last fight in December was a title fight that did not go her way, and for her still fighting and going the distance made for a great way to prepare for what Invicta has in store on June 11.

“ I’ve done, you know, lots of grappling tournaments. As far as preparation goes, my last fight was a title fight at 115.  So, if we went how Cage Fury (CFFC) does it. It’s like you do four rounds and you may need a fifth. So I think four straight rounds, like hard rounds. I think that was like a big way to prep for it.”

DeCoursey, the other competitors, and Invicta FC fans will find out Friday night on AXS TV when the tournament kicks off at 8 PM EST.  Those without AXS can watch the action on the Invicta FC YouTube channel.
