Bellator 222, Lyoto Machida, Chael Sonnen

Lyoto Machida missing Chael Sonnen’s trash talk

In the co-main event of Bellator 222, two light heavyweight legends in Chael Sonnen and Lyoto Machida will square off. The winner could very well receive the next title shot at Ryan Bader. But, something that is different for this fight is the fact that Sonnen has not been trash talking as much as he has been. Which, according to Machida is something the Brazilian is actually missing.

“He’s very respectful of me, and I appreciate that,” Machida said to MMA Junkie. “But actually, I’d like him to promote the fight a little bit more, because he knows how to do that. I’m not worried about trash talk. If it’s going to be good for the fight, I’m okay, man.”

Although the fight is a pair between two legends, it was supposed to be the main event, but Bellator made a late switch and now will see Rory MacDonald and Neiman Gracie. For Machida, he is fine with it as he knows the promotion has to do what is best for the promotion.

“Bellator has to do what’s going to be the best for the event,” he said of being the co-main event. “I’ll have my turn. I’ll have my chance to have a main event in Bellator. I know I’ll have to wait a little bit, but soon I’ll be fighting for the title or something like that.”

Ultimately, Lyoto Machida is looking to become 2-0 inside the Bellator cage with a win against Sonnen. He admits he was nervous last time out for his debut, but now is excited to step back in there.

“I was a little bit concerned about my first fight (in Bellator) because, as a fighter, you never know,” he said. “When you step into a different cage sometimes you can feel the pressure. My fight was against a very tough opponent, Rafael Carvalho, who’s a former middleweight champion. Now I can’t wait to step in there again.”
