Professional Kickboxing now authorized in British Columbia

Commissioner Kelly Gilday of the British Columbia Athletic Commission has authorized kickboxing competitions to now be decided at the professional level, not just amateur.  Commissioner Kelly Gilday of the British Columbia Athletic Commission has authorized kickboxing competitions to now be decided at the professional level, not just amateur.

The ruling allows the province’s combat sports athletes to compete more safely and at a higher level. The province says while the sport is allowed on the amateur in level B.C., it was previously unsanctioned at the professional level.

Gilday says her organization has been working toward the inclusion of professional kickboxing for quite some time and the step will reduce the risk to fighters by allowing them to transition from amateur to professional.

The commissioner’s ruling will allow the promotion of these pro kickboxing matches matches as a sub-group of mixed martial arts and it expects to have full oversight of the sport in place in 2020.

The British Columbia Athletic Commissioner oversees the conduct of professional boxing and mixed martial arts (MMA) as well as amateur kickboxing, MMA, Muay Thai and pankration events throughout the Province of British Columbia. The Athletic Commissioner is committed to ensuring the safety and integrity of combat sports in the Province.
