Search called off for body of missing wrestler Hamzah Alsaudi

Today, the U.S. Coast Guard called off its search for a man who went missing in the ocean off the coast of Pacifica, California on Thursday. Hamzah Alsaudi, 22, a senior at San Francisco State University, was reportedly doing a “polar plunge” when waves overwhelmed him.

Alsaudi went swimming with two other men at Esplanade Beach around 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Pacifica police said in a statement. While in the ocean, the college wrestler was knocked below the waves and disappeared from view.

The two men were able to make it to shore and call for help. Drones, boats and aircraft were later deployed to assist the U.S. Coast Guard, California State Parks Ocean Lifeguards, the California Highway Patrol air unit and the San Bruno Police Department during their search.

Alsaudi, who was born in Baghdad and grew up in Santa Monica, was a Gators wrestler and political science major.
