ONE Championship promoter wants champion vs. champion fight: Angela Lee vs Joanna Jedrzejczyk

The Differences Between One Championship and UFC

UFC and One Championship- MMA leaders.

For a long time, the UFC has been the leading MMA promotion in the world, and it definitely holds the monopoly in the MMA market. However, things began to change with the rise of ONE FC. You can be sure they know a thing or two about MMA and how this business works, the company has grown to become the home of some of the biggest talents and the events are massive.

They do seem to be similar, but there are actually plenty of differences between ONE and UFC, and they are really worlds apart when it comes to business models, rules, and the way in which they approach the sport.

Today we will look at more about these differences, and if either of these two catches your eye, check out how you can bet on them at the Fanduel website

Weight classes.

The first difference is that the UFC has more weight classes, there are a total of 12 divisions, including 4 female ones. The gap between these weight classes carries between 10-20lbs, which is quite a lot.

One of the other hand has 8 weight classes, half of these are for female fighters. The gap for these classes is the same as in the UFC.

They also have an ‘atom weight’ division which is 115lbs, which cannot be found in the UFC.

Weigh-in rulings.

The biggest difference is in the weigh-in rulings. Most think that ONE does a better job of stopping fighters cutting too much weight, we leave it to you to decide, however we do agree it is healthier for the fighters.

In UFC, fighters cut a lot of weight, and you can often see them missing the scales, they have applied some rules to prevent this, but weight cutting is still a big problem in UFC. They can often cut 30lbs or more in a week before the right, as a result they often collapse and end up in hospital during the weight cut!

In UFC, they must cut the weight and hit the limit for the weight class or go slightly below, they weigh ins begin on the morning of the day before the fight and have 24 hrs to rehydrate.

In ONE, they have a unique concept with weigh-ins, the promotion bans cutting weight by dehydration, forcing fighters to cut less weight and must remain fully hydrated at all times. The goal is to make the competition more even because each fighter will fight at their walking weight. Leading up to a fight, they perform multiple weigh-ins and tests, to ensure the fighter is hydrated, healthy, and ready to fight.

Things that One does differently.

The judging of ONE has roots in Pride. They will use five criteria to decide the winner of a round or fight, unlike in UFC judges do not score the fight round by round, instead they judge it in its entirety.

Here are some of the judging criteria.

  • The main priority is if there was a knockdown, or a near submission.
  • Then judges will look for the internal or accumulated damage done by a fighter.
  • Their next concern is striking combinations or ground control. This means top control or superior positioning.
  • After this, they consider the number of completed or defended takedowns.
  • And the final consideration is effective aggression.

Different rules.

ONE does not adopt the unified rules of MMA, it does have similar rules to the UFC. They both have the same legal techniques and ban the same strikes.

The rules of both are the same when it comes to eye pokes and groin strikes. Soccer kicks were allowed in early ONE events, however, they were banned shortly after. The same ruling goes for head stomps, which were never allowed for ONE.

In ONE, fighters can throw knees to a grounded opponent, also allowing head kicks when both fighters are grounded. These are things that the UFC does not allow.
